Inclusion: What is it and why?

First of all, inclusion is about increasing the inclusion of all citizens in society. This includes people with disabilities, groups with limited mobility, as well as other aspects that should be taken into account: abilities, language, culture, gender, age, and much more. For example, the same ramps can be used not only by people using wheelchairs, but also by parents with strollers, people with heavy suitcases, bicycles, etc.

Inclusivity enables the creation of an environment where every person feels accepted, respected, and able to participate in all aspects of society. This is fundamentally important for various areas, including education, the workplace, product and service design, and cultural events and entertainment. So universal design is design for everyone.

So why should it be applied at the business level? First of all, companies that take into account the needs of different user groups gain a significant advantage in the market, as they create their products that meet a wider range of audience needs. And will also increase the percentage of positive experiences of consumers interacting with the company’s resources.

The words “inclusion” and “diversity” are often used together, and people think they are synonymous. However, they are not. What is the difference?

Diversity is our identity, the things that make us different from one another: sex, age, ethnicity, physical abilities, ethnicity, veteran status, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, health status, and other visible and invisible characteristics. Diversity is where we come from. And inclusion is about supporting and involving people from different backgrounds in all social activities by creating an environment, policies, and practices that respect and value the unique characteristics, experiences, and contributions of each person. In other words, diversity is the answer to the question “Who?”, and inclusion is the answer to the question “How?”.

Although inclusivity and diversity are similar terms, these concepts are not interchangeable. A company can be diverse but not inclusive. For example, you hire people with disabilities or a single parent, and at the same time do not create conditions in which these employees will feel comfortable – a workplace that takes into account the special needs of an employee with a disability, or flexible working hours.

What does inclusion mean in practice? For example, if an employer says that it adheres to the principles of inclusion, then all social groups and communities (of different ages, genders, beliefs, etc.) understand: here they will not be discriminated against because of these characteristics, but will be evaluated only on their competencies and professionalism. Or when a service institution declares that it is inclusive, this serves as a signal for all people: “I will be welcome here and I will feel comfortable, because my needs are taken into account.”

How to measure the level of inclusivity in a company?

Measuring the level of inclusion in a company is a complex task that includes various aspects of corporate culture, policies and employee experience. Today, there is no one-size-fits-all algorithm. However, there is a common set of indicators and strategies that are most often used to measure the level of inclusion. They can be divided into 8 levels, and below we will consider each of them in more detail.

1. Recruitment

At this level, we assess the level of recruitment and hiring processes in our company. If the hiring and recruiting processes are inclusive, then the main selection criterion is the qualification of the specialist. That is, we consider all specialists, regardless of their gender, age, nationality, religious beliefs, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, presence of children and other characteristics. And the restrictions applied during selection are regulated by current legislation, for example: a ban on involving women with children under three years old in night shifts, or working conditions that require the absence of certain diseases.
